A clear picture of your privacy
This policy explains how BU1ST Technologies Pty Ltd handles personal information in the Sydney NOW website, progressive web app and related services (together, “Sydney NOW”). It covers the current discovery experience and additional features, such as organiser workspaces or ticketing, where those features are available and used.
You can explore publicly available Sydney events without creating an account. Some functionality, including device-location recommendations, saved events, publishing, syncing, ticketing and notifications, uses additional information only when you use the relevant feature.
Optional accounts, friends and reviews
Account and social features are optional and require a separate BU1ST-hosted account service to be enabled. If you register, the service processes your email address, account name, authentication details and account preferences. Account sign-in is disabled on the public site until that service is securely connected.
Friend connections use invitation codes shared directly between users; there is no publicly searchable directory. Pending invitations are visible only to the sender and recipient. Accepted friends can receive an event plan only when you explicitly choose to share it. Your other saved events and personal location are not automatically disclosed to friends.
Event reviews submitted through an account may include a one-to-five-star rating and review text. Reviews await moderation; pending contributions are visible to their author and service administrators, while approved contributions may be displayed publicly. You can request deletion of your review or other account information through our data-deletion process.
The information we collect and hold
| Category | Examples | When it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Browsing and technical data | IP address, request timestamps, device/browser information, errors, security logs and pages or API requests. | When our hosting and service providers deliver or secure the website. |
| Preferences and saved plans | Saved event identifiers, selected filters and other preferences. | Stored in browser/device storage for convenient use; optional cloud sync may hold a copy if you enable it. |
| Location | Your device location if you allow access, or a location you manually search for. | To sort nearby events, centre a map or attach location to a submission you choose to make. |
| Contributions and messages | Event submissions, live reports, moderation reports, text, photos, videos, contact messages and limited device identifiers. | When you submit content, ask for help or report an issue using features that support those actions. |
| Organiser and ticketing data | Organiser names, contact details, event records, ticket holder email, order and payment status, transaction references. | Only if you use available organiser, waitlist, RSVP or ticketing tools. |
| Notifications | Push subscription details, saved watches and notification preferences. | If supported on your device and you opt in to updates or reminders. |
We generally collect information directly through the feature you use. Some event details, including organiser information, are obtained from public or third-party event sources. We do not ask for sensitive information as part of ordinary browsing; please do not post another person's private or sensitive information in public submissions.
Why we use it
We use relevant information to provide and maintain Sydney NOW: displaying events, searching and ranking results, saving plans, enabling opt-in features, moderating submissions, helping organisers manage events, facilitating transactions where available, improving performance and preventing misuse.
We may use technical and pseudonymous information to investigate errors, detect spam or security incidents, answer support requests and comply with applicable legal obligations. Our discovery recommendations may involve automated ranking of event data; source details can be incomplete or change after publication.
Where we send service messages about a feature you requested, those messages are related to operating that feature. Any separate promotional communications should have an appropriate opt-out mechanism and comply with applicable requirements.
Location, camera and notifications
Device location
Nearby search requests browser/device permission first. You can say no and continue using Sydney NOW. In the current discovery website, location is used in browser memory to calculate nearby results; it is not added to a personal profile simply by pressing “Near me”. If a different feature asks you to attach a location to content you submit, that is a separate action.
Camera, photos and media
Camera and photo access applies only when supported features ask you to photograph a flyer, attach media or scan a ticket. Uploaded media may be stored and reviewed for display, moderation, support or security. Do not upload people’s images or personal details unless you are entitled to do so.
Push messages and reminders
Web push requires your permission and production configuration. You can change notification permission in browser/device settings. Some native reminders run on the device; opting out of alerts does not prevent basic event discovery.
External services and overseas processing
Sydney NOW is hosted using Netlify. The discovery experience may load maps from MapLibre / OpenFreeMap, fonts from Google Fonts, map libraries from a delivery network, and event photos from official or third-party sources. Your browser may send technical data, such as your IP address, to those providers when their resources load.
Where an organiser offers paid ticketing through supported features, payment may be handled by Stripe rather than by Sydney NOW directly. We do not require you to submit payment-card details to browse event listings. External booking links may take you to the organiser or ticketing provider, whose privacy terms apply.
Our service providers operate internationally. Personal information processed by overseas providers may be accessible or processed outside Australia, including in the United States; locations can vary by service and configuration. We aim to use providers with appropriate privacy and security arrangements. If you need further details of the providers used for a particular feature, contact us.
We may disclose information where needed to provide a service you requested, respond to a lawful requirement, protect the service from misuse, or handle support and disputes. We do not publish your private contact information merely because you browse events.
Security, storage and retention
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures intended to protect information, including restricting access to operational records and using service-provider security controls. No online system can guarantee absolute security.
Some information is held locally in browser or device storage; other information is stored in Netlify-hosted application storage or with providers involved in a feature. We keep information for as long as needed for the purpose for which it was collected, subject to legal, accounting, fraud-prevention and dispute requirements. A specific retention period can depend on the record type and the applicable service.
For example, deleting an organiser workspace may remove its profile, published events and ticketing configuration while retaining qualifying order records needed for refunds, chargebacks, auditing or legal obligations. Removing browser storage does not automatically delete any information already submitted to our servers.
If we become aware of a significant data-security issue, we will assess and respond to it under applicable law, including notification requirements where relevant.
Your choices, access and deletion
Manage local data
Saved events in the current web experience use browser storage. You may remove individual saved items in the app or clear this website’s storage in your browser. Clearing storage also removes local preferences and can remove locally held sign-in or sync references.
Delete cloud or organiser information
If you used an optional Sync profile, use the in-app delete option where available. If you used an organiser workspace, use the organiser account deletion option where available. If you cannot access an old feature, email us with enough information to locate your records. See our data deletion guide for details and limitations.
Access, correct or ask questions
Contact hello@bu1st.com.au to request access to or correction of personal information we hold, ask what we retain, or request deletion where applicable. We may need to verify your identity before disclosing or modifying account or transaction records. Some records cannot be removed immediately if retention is lawfully necessary.

If the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) applies to your complaint and you are not satisfied with our response, or we have not responded within 30 days, you may be able to complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
We may update this policy when features, providers, laws or data-handling practices change. Material changes should be clearly presented. The effective date is at the top of this page.
